Miami Dade College Partners with Six Local High Schools to Get Students College Ready with Financial Aid and Admissions Marathons

Miami, January 15, 2013 – As a public service, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) financial aid and registration counselors, in collaboration with The Education Fund, will help high school students and their parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at six high schools during the months of January and February. The events are free.

The FAFSA and Admissions Marathons are an interactive series of three consecutive workshops for graduating high school seniors hosted in the high schools. During the workshop, parents and students will learn about the financial aid options available, including scholarships, grants and loans, and Miami Dade College experts will work with them individually to complete an online FAFSA application. Representatives from MDC’s registrar’s office will also be on-site to answer enrollment questions and help graduating students complete applications to the College.

In order to complete the FAFSA and MDC’s admission application, parents are advised to bring to the session: 1) 2012 or 2011 income tax return; 2) parent’s Florida driver’s license; 3) parent’s voter registration or parent’s permanent residency card (if he or she is not a citizen) and 4) parent’s vehicle registration (or other document that demonstrates Florida residency.)

The goal of the marathons is to increase high school student enrollment in postsecondary education. These events are a part of the many college-preparation activities offered through the Hispanic Access to College Education Resources Project (¡HACER!, Spanish for “to do”.) ¡HACER! is a collaborative initiative with the Lumina Foundation and 17 community partners, including MDC; Univision; the City of Miami; the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce; Miami-Dade County Public Schools; Bank of America and FIU to support and sustain college access and success for Latino high school students.

Students must be a graduating senior at one of the below high schools in order to attend a workshop. Below is the list of dates/times scheduled for each school. To register for a session, please contact the high school’s CAP advisor or graduation coach.

Saturday, February 9: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Miami Jackson Senior High School:
Wednesday, February 6: 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Friday, February 8: 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Saturday, February 9: 8:00 – 11:00 AM

Booker T. Washington Senior High School:

Thursday, February 7: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
